When I called back, they told me to press 1 to take me off their list. I did. Will this work, or is it part of their scam?

Kicked into answering machine, without a message.Tried dialing it, call could not be completed as dialed. Same time I was dialing it, I was connected to another person, without entering any number at all. Very odd
