I get these from time to time. Today, I am sad to say that I played along. I told the gentleman that I had a Google Chromebook and could not have a virus. He went on about the Windows computer in my house, i told him we have 8 computers (we do...a mix of operating systems). I asked which one had the problem and he gave me some numbers I pretended to write down. Then I let him try to explain to me that I had the trojan horse virus. I asked "which one?" He says "the trojan horse virus, it is very bad for your computer". Me: "but that is a class of virus. Which one was downloaded" Him: "The trojan horse." God forgive me, but I played along and for no other reason than my own amusement. It took several minutes and he was never specific.
When he said I should look at my screen, and follow his instructions, I told him I had to look up his company first (Bloomington, Indiana. he gave me an address, even). What I do believe is that good ol' American scammers engage people in So Asian countries to execute these scams at negligible cost. I would bet any money that the folks who are calling get some horrible wage for annoying us all and somebody who hates paying for school lunches or food stamps is getting fat off of those who actually pay the money.
I also wonder if the call backs add charges (the walmart card or whatever you hear when you call back). I wonder this because I was trying to write down the number and I don't have LD calling on my land line, but it rang through.) so now I'm on hold with Verizon checking if I got any weird charge backs from the call.
Good luck people. I've had my entertainment for the evening.
