I also got some pointers from a couple websites in case anyone like this manages to get through to you again. Ask for the person's name you are speaking to, the FULL NAME of the company, not just the initials---What does XTS stand for? Question EVERYTHING that comes out of that person's mouth. When he mispronounced my relative's name, that was my first clue. Then he said he was with a company that handles "Loss Remediation" which is a fancy term for Debt Collector. Tell him you refuse to do anything unless you handle it IN WRITING. Give out NO personal information, don't agree to ANYTHING until they send a WRITTEN REQUEST. NO credit card payment over the phone, NO payment schedules, NO NOTHING. Ask the name of the company (supposedly) paying them to contact you (it's probably a credit card company, hospital, or somewhere else you might have had any kind of bill--EVER). Get BOTH of the companies' PHYSICAL addresses, not PO Boxes, and have the person explain EXACTLY what is the issue. Ignore any threatening language, remember, these are scammers trying to scare you into paying them. Request a full explanation of the issue on their company letterhead, with the president or CEO's original signature, handwritten, not stamped or photocopied. Also tell them to send the documents that were supposedly refused, a copy of the court docket if they have threatened you with a lawsuit, the filing information where the lawsuit has been filed, and the refusal slips from the documents they claimed to try to deliver. DO NOT give them your address. Tell them you will be happy to have the packet delivered to your lawyer and discuss it with them then. By the time you get to this point, they will have hung up.
