Many answering machines have a code that can be entered so the caller doesn't have to listen to the outgoing message. This was essential back in the days of expensive long-distance calls.
If a person wanted to check their answering machine for messages when they were out of town, that person did not want to listen to a long-winded outgoing message, so the code was to bypass it. Check the instructions for your answering machine and see if that feature can be disabled. Otherwise, get a call blocker.
