Caller said they were from PG&E.  they asked about our electric bill and said they would call back.  The number did not come up on our phone indicating they were from PG&E so it seemed odd to me after they hung up.   Is this a telemarketer?

This sounds like the "we can save you money on your electric bill" scam where you are changed to a third party for billing (at a higher rate than you originally had).  If in doubt, contact your current energy supplier (phone number on bill).

We got a call from this number, and after they identified us, they hung up. I called back and got a "phone diconnected" recording.
We were especially concerned as my wife's purse and checkbook (with our address and phone number) were recently stolen
