Call from 856-437-1499 - when I answered they hung up.

They call and say that the State of NJ hire them to collect some sort of unpaid taxes that i never heard

Call and hang up or don't leave a message.

856-437-1499 called my 19 yr old daughter's cell, claiming to be the Colorado Revenue Department calling to collect a $500 debt for a local community college.  The caller had the last 4 digits of her social sec number, her cell number, and the knowledge, obviously, that she had attended that college (about a year ago). The caller stated he would accept cash (!), check, or money order. She owes the school nothing and said so to the caller, saying that she would call the college. That ended the conversation.

SUGGESTION: If getting a presumably fraudulent call like this, take good notes, play along until you get the address to which you are supposed to remit funds (perhaps a p.o. box?? unlikely to be an actual state gov't address). Do not give them any personal/financial data that they do not already know. Turn that address in plus your notes to the U.S. Postal Inspectors for investigation.

P.S. I will let the college know of this incident. I think they have had a data leak. The college never contacted my daughter about any alleged debt, so I doubt they referred a debt to these "856" people for collection.

Foreigner speaking broken English said they were trying to help my wife's parents with a tax problem in New Jersey and called my wife (in California) because their calls to her parent's business were not returned. Also said they were not allowed to give any details. The caller knew her father had surgery recently. My wife just asked for their number and said she would call them back.
