Caller ID says "WOMENS CANCER". They leave no message.
I call back after hours (using *67 to block my number). Their message is "The Women's Cancer Fund <pause> is not available right now. If you would like to leave a message, press 1. If you would like to try another extension, press 3. Or to speak to an operator, press 0. The voice mail system is full and can not take your messages right now. Thank you. Goodbye." No matter which button I press, nothing interesting happens. I suspect the voicemail is only to get your name and number so they can sell your information.
Their name sounds too generic. There are a number of charities with names like "The XXX Women's Cancer Fund" (I suspect most of those are legit). My guess is that by just using the last 3 words, any internet search will also connect to these legit charities giving a faux confidence boost for this one.
I did find one site that referenced just WCF:
http://www.cancer.org/treatment/supportprogra ... sourceId=123155
According to that page, you provide a ton of information to them and, at very best, you may receive $250 a year for rent/utilities. Sounds like a phishing scheme; I suspect they sell your name, and they rarely, if ever, award any money. They also require your utility bill account numbers. These numbers are all that are required to slam you over to an "alternate" provider. These provider's are much more expensive and take a ton of work to escape from. If you're battling cancer, you may not have the energy to fight it.
(also from this page) They are affiliated with "Cancer Recovery Foundation of America", "Children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation" and "The Breast Cancer Charities of America". I believe these are all considered to be scam cancer charities.
