SMS response from an out-of-state ad on Craigslist, the usual "My assistant will pay you with a certified check & make arrangements for the pick-up later" except with weirder capitalization, spelling, and grammar. Does anybody fall for these?

Yep.  I got the same text message from an ad I posted on Craigslist.

At first the message offered to pay me by check an additional $50 above my asking price to hold my item.  I agreed and then got another message saying the assistant had confused my check with someone else's and overpaid me.  

I was instructed to deposit the check when I got it into my account and wanted me to wire the extra funds to a "mover" that would come pick up the purchased items.  

The message sender even told me that his wife had just been diagnosed w/ breast cancer.  What an [***]!

5 days later I still had no check.  I ran a search on the number and found this listing.

Stay away!!!!

Also got a text message reference a product for sale on Graigslist.  Sender offered fifty dollars over my price to remove listing and hold for him/her, promised cashiers check.

I did send my address but my home is protected by two large dogs and Smith & Wesson.

Product is still listed.

How dare they scam on people that are trying to make a living.  They would be the stupid ones.  How can you want to buy an item without looking at it first.  We're we born yesterday?
