Actually, it is American Express.  I initially had the same suspicions as you, and when I first called the number for American Express that is on the back of my card, they said it wasn't one of their numbers.  But the calls continued, so I called them again and asked if they could contact the number to see if it was legitimate.  They were able to confirm that it was one of the phone numbers for their Account Services department.  They were able to confirm also that I was not the person they were looking for and they even put notes to that effect all over the computer.  Unfortunately, the calls have continued - and this morning they even had the nerve to call my cell phone! It's absolutely maddening!  If I wasn't a customer, I might be able to sue them for annoying me like this.  Still, I'm documenting every call, and if it comes down to it, I will sue them for the times they have made me late for work with this nonsense, putting my job in jeopardy.  I've had it with these jerks!

I just searched the number on the AMEX website. Use the link above and the 800 number is listed in multiple results. Legit.

That's BS.  This is a scam, as confirmed by other websites.  We called the real American Express and they also confirmed it.  Maybe you're the person who's calling us.

This is a phishing scam and is NOT from American Express. Check their phone numbers on their (American Express) website:

https://www212.americanexpress.com/dsmlive/ds ... ad94RCRD&page=1

and the back of your AMEX credit card and you will see that it is different. The prerecorded message is always the same:

"THIS IS AMERICAN EXPRESS CALLING ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT BUSINESS MATTER, YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS URGENTLY NEEDED BY THE END OF THE DAY, PLEASE CALL US AT 1-800-678-0738, AND PLEASE HAVE YOUR AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOUNT AVAILABLE WHEN YOU CALL, WE CAN BE REACHED 24 HOURS A DAY, THANK YOU."

Some of the phone numbers he/they call(s) from are the following:

(215) 873-3443 "Pennsylvania Call"
(404) 697-3127 "Georgia Call"
(718) 564-3261 "New York Call"
(954) 308-5595 "Florida Call"
(954) 503-1800 "American Express"

These phone numbers seem to be from cell phones or landlines with disguised caller-ID info, even saying "American Express" on your ID screen.  There are many people reporting this scam on various consumer complaint websites. American Express has verified that it is NOT them. (Call American Express using the number on the back of your card and see for yourself.)

This/these scammer(s) is/are relentless and will call 2 to 3 times a week, and usually 3 times during the day & evening, for months at a time.

IF YOU RECEIVE HIS/THEIR CALL, MAKE NOTE OF IT (day & time called, phone number used), AND REPORT IT TO THE FOLLOWING FEDERAL AUTHORITIES:

http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/cmplanding.shtm

http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm

https://www.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx

AND your Local Authority's consumer identity theft division.
