Got two phone calls from this number today, with the same recorded message in a heavy Indian accent stating that I was being investigated for tax fraud and tax evasion, and that I or my criminal defense attorney needed to call them back before I got arrested. A little tip-off is that they didn't use my name (or any name) in the message. Umm, if you know all that about my alleged impending arrest, I'd think you would know my name.

I want you or your criminal attorney to return the call. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. I repeat the number is 718-509-3076. Thank you."

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.
