I received an automated call from this number around 10:00 am saying their is a lawsuit pending by the IRS and to return the call immediately. I called the number (above) and got a Mr. William Black that stated his name and his IRS ID number. It all sounded very official and there was "a lot" of background noise like he was calling from a call center. He immediately asked if I was "full name" and ended up getting or I gave (not sure now, and this is scary) my SS#. He stated that I was audited for 2010 to 2013 and that there were problems with my returns. (Unfortunately, there was a problem with one of the returns for one of those years, so I did file and amended return, so I thought it might have had something to do with this). He stated that there is a lawsuit currently being filed by the IRS in the local court house and I was being charged with four counts: Fraud, Violation of Federal IRS Law #80***, Intent to deceive, and Willful Misrepresentation. This all sounded very official and then he stated that a representative was sent to my house on April 21 and May 25, 2015 and that I never responded, so thus the lawsuit. I stated that I've never received any notifications in the mail or that were left at my house, and that the first I heard of an IRS issue was five minutes before I called the number back. He asked if I would like to settle this in court or out of court by paying $7,864.00 in fees. I told him absolutely not until I review the records and what the audit showed. I asked him to send me the details of the audit and he said I would be getting the information in the next week. I immediately called my tax consultant and he said it sounded like a fraudulent call. I did a number look up and didn't come up with much. I then filed a fraud alert on the IRS web page to make sure. I then tried to call the number back several time now around 12:30 PM (today- same day), and the number keeps dropping off. OBVIOUSLY this was a fraudulent call, and a very deceptive one at that. Evidently this is common by the IRS webpage banner notification. Here is the IRS Fraud Reporting Page incase you also get this type of call: https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/
