I get random calls from this number....this is the first time in a few months since the last time it called me, so, if it IS a legitimate collection company for student loans, they should be calling on a regular basis, not random times over the course of a few months. Collection companies are on a rotating call queue and they call until they actually speak to someone. Once that happens, they won't call until it is flagged for a follow up call. I used to work in collections and know how the calls work.
VERY smart of those of you on here NOT to give out personal information!!! I don't remember who said it, but thank you for the heads up about Great Lakes....I just got a letter from them, so I will have to check to make sure that my loan was not referred to My Fed Loan.
Also, to the guy saying to pay our loans....if My Fed Loan is legit, why are they calling people who don't have loans (or people whose loans are paid in full or deferred? If they're legit, they should be leaving a message stating who they are trying to reach and, by Federal Law, stating that it is a personal matter and to call back a specific number in order to discuss the matter further. They should also be leaving a reference number, file number or other identifier so that a return call can be matched up to the correct account. At that time, if they ask for any personal information beyond a name, you have the option of refusing your SS# and demannding that they tell you who they are and why they are calling. A company calling to collect on a loan cannot refuse to discuss the matter if they're legit and the caller has refused to give any personal information. That's protected information by federal law and collection companies have specific laws they must follow, including not demanding personal information in order to discuss. That's what the reference number is for - to verify who the caller is.
