People set up a conference call and participants are given an access number to use when they call so they can join the conversation. The access number is good only for the time period that it was set up for.

No, it is a scam.  While it may be a conference call number, you will be charged a fee for the call by your phone carrier.  The reason its a scam is because when you call the number there is no mention to you that you will be charged for the call.

Regarding the number being some sort of scam, I can solve the mystery. The number is my conference call number that my husband and I set up on freeconferencecall.com for people on our internal team in our company. Even if you call the number you need an access code to get on the call, and it wouldn't be of any interest to anyone else, it would be dead air unless we had a call scheduled. Why it is floating around on blogs or the Internet at large I don't know. People can't access it without the code anyway. And it is not a scam, we've been using their service for over a year and many collegues in our industry also rely on it. It's actually a fantastic resource when you want to have more than 3 people on a call, but they do limit the number of callers and the time to an hour for the free service. I 100% agree with you, NEVER call any number you don't know, because there are scammers and predators everywhere.

You're making a toll call. Where could you imagine that you won't be charged a long distance charge. And you're charged by your own carrier and not the bridge provider. They do it for FREE.
