Our cellphone companies sell our info to these random people.
My guess is they ask you for credit card info, then take the 25,000 from you that they say you won. There's no magazines involved. It's incredibly rude - you guys are lucky that you are sound of mind enough to be suspicious but think of people with dementia (for example) and how easy of a target they would be.
I got the same publisher's sweepstakes speech from a lady with an Indian accent and when I asked how they got my number she said "oh probably because you are with either Visa, Mastercard, or American Express, or from other information". I said I don't own any of those cards and I have never entered my info to unknown sources and asked her to repeat where she got my information she said "like I said, probably from other information".
Then she said "okay I have entered your name into the sweepstakes have a nice day" and hung up. wasted 9 minutes of my airtime and I don't have a long distance plan. Should have known better than to pick up.
