I got a call from these people today and the lady was actually nice. The debt they were trying to collect I actually owed at one point in time. There were just a few minor details that they happened to overlook:
1) the debt was owed in 1994 and it is now 2012! I told her this was over 18 years old, these things get written off after 7-10 years and she said that is a popular misconception! I said well you need to tell the Federal Government that!
2) I filed Bankruptcy about 7 years ago. When I told her that she said well maybe this wasn't included in your bankruptcy, I said yes because it isn't on my credit report and had been written off!
3) I told her the I actually thought this had been paid off a long time ago, she said no there was $118 left on it and they wanted over $500 after interest had accrued for 18 years?!? I said at some point interest stops accruing! However, she was helpful enough to say they could settle it for $252!!!!
Hilarious, I told her I need to check my files because I was pretty sure this was paid and I told her I need to contact my lawyer as well. Thank God I am a packrat when it comes to stuff like this and never throw payoff letters or receipts away! Due to something like this happening before, but not after 18 years!!!!
