631-343-4949 left a threatening automated voice mail at 9:47am PST today that said "initial appearance before magistrate judge or a grand jury for a federal criminal offense.  Now this is the final attempt to reach you.  To know your case number and to speak to a Federal agent, call back on 631-343-4949.  I repeat 631-343-4949.  Thanks."  This number appears to be from either Commack or Hicksville NY but may be spoofed.  No government agency uses a number like this, nor would a government agency call about a criminal offense.  Instead they would either send certified letters/summons, or enter a warrant and make an arrest.  Do not be fooled by these calls!  Do not call them back, and if you answer one of these calls and a someone begins to asks questions, do not answer any questions, or provide any information, or send any money!  This is a SCAM!

Thanks."  I was trying to figure out how this would work, but a friend pointed out "If you call back and you don't have a "case number," they will have to gather all sorts of information to "find" it.  Plus, they could ask for a credit card to pay "your fine."  I will also report this to the FTC.

Just got the same exact phone call!  The only difference is the automated call wished me "Good Luck" at the end.  Complete scam.

received call stating that we would have to go to court on a IRS back audit AND  that they would seize our bank accounts unless we paid $3980.00TO THEM TODAY.  HE SAID WE COULD CALL ANOTHER NUMBER TO GET THE id NUMER TO PAY ON.  the person on the phome had a heavy mid east accent and spoke very fast.  He stated that the IRS had audited our accounts back to 2007 and that we did owe them this amoint. I we choose to fight it the total with all the penalties and fees would be $87000.   we could get in our car,go the bank and withdraw the money and pay them to an Ituned Gift card which we could purchase at Dollar General and Krogers.   While he kept me on the phones going supposedly to the bank, my wife  drove us the the Dardanelle police department where we were reporting what was going on and the office took our phone and told them who they were talking to they  stated that we were not following protocol and we would be contacted by the Dardanelle police with a warrant for our arrest.   I did receive a call from the phone listed as the Dardanelle Arkansas phone number from a Sgt Williams.  in a few mnutes and I handed my cell phone to the desk officer and she asked who they were again and stated that no one by that name worked for them.
