Received a call from this number saying I had a debt from 2008 it is now 2017!! I monitor my CR monthly and have never seen this debt. Once I denied it she said she would put this down as an "identity theft" and gave me a bogus name and acct number for the original debtor. When I called them they stated that their acct numbers aren't even arranged like that and wouldn't come from their company. Furthermore I haven't lived in this town in over 14yrs!!

Suspect number spoofs numbers that are tied to CBE Group.  Come from area codes that relate to people they are trying to reach,    Beware  of any calls that are your area code but no identification.  BIG SCAM!!!!!  Search results from
calls returned to area code 567 show 614-369-3507 as the "real" caller

Why would you go to the trouble of calling?

It is incumbent upon them under the law to prove that the debt exists and that you owe it, and that they have the legal right to collect it.  You are not obligated under the law to prove that you don’t owe or that it is paid.

Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt.  It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes.  The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

Received a phone call today from a very rude man asking me what my name was, telling me he was charging me with check fraud.  I asked what this pertained to and he insisted I had a pay day loan that was never paid back or something..  So I instantly got offended being that I don't do pay day loans and he started arguing with me, calling me a liar!!  I instantly hung up the phone, because I knew this can't be right...
