The number is used by a private "FOR PROFIT" company that solicits donations for charities. They can call you even if you are on the government's Do Not Call List because they are collecting money for charity. Sadly, our government has not made stricter rules for these companies that can take large chunks of donations to keep for themselves without clearly disclosing their FOR PROFIT intentions when calling you as if they were a charity. They will tell you if you ask, as they are required to do so, but if you don't ask they can elect not to disclose their intentions, making hundreds of thousands of dollars from the kindness of people who are trusting and don't think to ask questions when a "charity" is asking for a donation. You could donate $250 and the charity may only see $50 (or even less) of that money with the company pocketing the rest.
You can call 1-800-370-9744 which has an automated system. If you call the number that originally called you, an automated message should give you that 800 number.
Upon calling the 800 number, you should get some options from the automated system. One of the options (was '9' when I called) is for your number to be added to a Do Not Call list within their company. They will automatically pull your number (you cannot use this if your number is blocked when you call) from their Caller ID and add it to their list. After getting your number, the automated system will say your phone number so you can confirm it (confirmation was '1' when I called). They do say it can take up to 7 days to get you off their calling list (apparently their computers run slow).
After the 7 days if you still get calls from them, contact your Non-Emergency Local Dispatch to report the harassment and ask to speak with someone in your local law enforcement department who can advise you on how to get this company to stop their harassment.
