This is how the scam works: robocaller runs on a computer outside of the United States. Numbers in its database get called on some regular basis. The screener checks if the target is valid by waiting for an answer, and asking them to press a button. When you press '1' to speak to an operator, the call gets handed off to a person in the United States that is given a script to follow, and the goal of getting your credit card information.

The people that answer the phones aren't otherwise trained in customer service. They're people that answered "work from home, be your own boss, make money!" ads on the Internet or in cheap classified ads. They end up victimized by the scam, too, as oftentimes they're never paid for the work.

Quick solution: just hang up. Don't press 1. Don't be proud. Just hang up the phone. Report the number to the FTC, but don't expect anything to be done about it. The numbers are spoofed, grafted from lists of inactive phone numbers.

One of these days, if I'm ever able to keep one of these people (and I'm using that term loosely) on the phone long enough to get a legitimate address/phone number, I'm either gonna do one of two things with them (and one may lead to another):

1. Send them a bill for my time. I figure a bill for $500 or so will get them to stop calling. Then, when they don't send me the payment (which is highly likely) I will either turn them over to collections or file a lawsuit.

2. File a lawsuit. This would be somewhere in the $10 million or so range. Really send a message. Don't know how much that would cost, but it would definitely make a point.
