Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

I keep getting emails and calls from this company threatening legal action for a payday loan that I don't owe. I have requested a validation of debt and they refused. Won't even give me a legal mailing address.

Read and understand Tamianth's Notes.  Your callers are most likely Indian debt/law scammer/extortionists.  This is a total scam.  Do not return their calls and do not agree to give them any money.  I called that 503 number out of curiosity, the female robo-greeter has a distinct Anglo/Indian accent. She is almost always used as a robo-greeter in the Indian or Pakistani scams.  Those e-mails are meant to intimidate you.  These scammer pick on women, single mothers, the elderly and members of the immigrant community.

Just because a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt does not mean you owe it
If a voice on the telephone claims you owe a debt:

1.    Demand the person give you his or her name, company name, and address
2.     Demand a debt validation letter by US mail.  E-mail no good.
3.    Do not pay  the collection agent or anyone else a  DIME  until the debt is validated.

Of course they won’t do this, no scammer ever will, so simply block their calls and ignore them.

If they are bothering you,

Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.

Put the fear of Krishna on their tails.
