I did some more research and found this:
Abbeville police warn about phone scam 2 years ago
The Abbeville Police Department is advising everyone who gets a phone call from a research company asking for personal information not to surrender the information to the stranger on the phone.
Throughout the parish, residents have been getting phone calls from someone stating to be a rep from K&B National Research Company - a company hired by another company to do product research.
The research rep on the other end asked the individual if they would like to take part in a survey. The research rep said they will pay the person $125 for taking the survey
If the caller says “yes” then they first answer a few questions to see if they qualify for the survey.
The research rep asks the age of the person, the education and what do they do for a living. If they like who they have on the other end, more personal questions will be asked.
Abbeville Detective Jason Hebert warns everyone in the parish not give any information to a stranger on the phone.
“If they are willing to pay you $125, then it sounds too good to be true,” Hebert said. “It is a scam. They want your social security number or maybe they’ll ask you about checking account numbers.”
He said these research reps are searching for the elderly. If the caller has an college education or seems too smart and may catch on the scam, the rep informs them that they do not qualify for the survey and hangs up.
“Do not give out vital information to anyone you do not know,” Hebert said.
