It is legit. It is indeed AAA and when the person initially called me, they left a voicemail on my business line. I'm not sure how the person got my number since it's unlisted and I'm self-employed and when I called the number back, AAA told me they only had my cell and landline listed. Anyway after much confusion, we were able to sort it out. I have an auto and home policy with them and they said my membership was set to expire and since my card changed my membership didn't auto-renew. I will admit AAA is annoying because their letters are automated and its hard getting to an agent over the phone so if you are a AAA customer, it's best to deal with a local agent (like I do).
I'm not sure about the phone calls getting creepy messages, and I sympathize to anyone who has. Like another poster mentioned, it's very much possible that someone is spoofing their number so if your ever in doubt, call AAA's number on their website and ask to speak to someone in your state (since many agents are only authorized to handle accounts within their own state).
