When did you receive a text from him? and did you receive a check, for he contacted me as well about an item last week and said that I'd have a check monday but still haven't seen it and I've tried contacting the person via text yesterday and haven't received a reply.

I just received a text message from this number regarding an item I'm selling in a classified ad. While I can't be sure it's a scammer, the text did include several classic scammer hints, such as claiming he/she is moving from out of town, will send a cashier's check for more than the asking price, and would send a local courier to pickup item, etc. Buyer beware.

He said his name was James Wayne and offered a little bit more to seal the deal and then ask for me to say sold on the item where I was selling it to him.  I still have not received any messages since the last one on Monday.  Also have not seen the check and it's been 5 days.

No, I received no additional correspondence from him. After I discovered it was a scam, I told him the treadmill was sold. That was the easiest way to discontinue contact with this thief.

This scam is a common one. If you provided him with any personal information (name, phone number, address, bank info, etc.), it might behoove you to notify the authorities and DO NOT ship anything to him:

Beware of Classified Ad Fraud

1. Phone number listed in ad is wrong.
2. Buyer or seller explains that they are currently out of the country or outside the state.
3. Buyer offers to pay with a money order or cashiers check for significantly more than the asked for price. 4. Seller asks to have money wired to them or payed via an online service and states that the item will require delivery.
5. Buyer or seller requests unreasonable personal or financial information.
6. Ad or offer is poorly written, generic, or strange sounding.
7. Offer is simply too good to be true.

This person send me a message via text, buying an item of mine that I am selling on a local site, saying they are moving from Ohio and would send a cashiers check for a little more than the asking price and have a local courier pick up the item after the check was cashed. This is completely fraudulent, he/she will not send you a check at all and is just trying to get information out of you. Disregard this number and/or report it to the authorities if need be.
