As AJ mentioned, the spam reporting service mentioned by Alfalfa is true.  Here are some links about the service.

I just used the service and received a text message back from Verizon thanking me for the information and telling me to block the number from my phone.  That seems like it will take care of the problem.

Since when is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution a host of "scam" links? Alfalfa linked to an article with vastly more practical advice than yours, and tends to do that sort of good deed often.

The described repository is doing the same damned thing as your idea to "report it to your wireless provider", except pooling examples of SMS spam in a central database. That way the problem can be studied as a whole to improve countermeasures. The FTC had the same idea when in 1998 it opened an email address for collection of emailed spam. (originally "UCE@FTC.gov", replaced a few years later with "spam@UCE.gov")

Cloudmark explains the service here:

Attn.Oh.Best Buy shopper, your entry has won! Go to http://bestbuyrwds.com/?8888 and enter code 7757 to claim your $1000 gift card now! No entry. Not Best Buy.  - This one came a 5:20 AM...

We received the same TEXT message from 4 different phone numbers to 3 different phones. I believe that these are being sent through an "auto-dial" type scam because two of the phones is my kid's, that are only used for emergency purposes.
