My husband got a call from this number, some guy claiming to represent a "police magazine" that promits safety or publishes photos of offenders or some other tall tale, looking for supporters/advertisers. Hubby said he would donate $50, the guy said he would not accept anything less than $300. I overheard and insisted on checking if it's a scam because it sounds like it. Couldn't find any info under 411/white pages reverse lookup, but I found lots of info about such scams on this website (under a bunch of different numbers, from googling "police magazine scams") and also facebook (Calgary Police have been warning about this one) that confirmed my suspicions. I think they try to scare people into donating by saying they're from the police (esp for folks for whom English isn't a first language, or newcomers from countries where the police are truly scary). Always do some research before parting with your cash!
