Today the wife gets the same call from 416 000 5591 on her cell phone.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 11:36 AM EST: This would be, what, the 10th call from the "416-000" series of numbers? In addition to the "416-000-5591" number calling me just now, I've already received calls from "416-000-3196", "416-000-1396", "416-000-5876", and "416-000-7953". All calls, interestingly , were to my Rogers cellphone - a number that I do not give out often. This leads me to be a little curious as to how folks are getting my number without me giving it out to them.

Oh, and someone may comment that the "National Do Not Call" list for Canadians is a good option or that being put on some "Do Not Call" list of businesses that call would work as well. If only things were so simple. At least in Canada, I am not about to put my number on it as (relatively) recently, it was found that telemarketers could purchase the list of folks on the list and from there, call the ones that didn't want to be called in the first place. And then there are the "Do Not Call" lists of actual individual folks that call/harass/annoy people with their repetitive phoning. The last thing I want to do is to let these (auto)dialers of telemarketers and their ilk to find out that a particular phone number (mine) will lead to a live person. If their calling machines find out a phone number had someone/thing pick up, that would lead to their machines to call over and over. It's like they're thinking, "We like to repeatedly harass people because, hey, if someone picked up once, surely someone will pickup again. And if we harass them enough, we might score a customer."

Like the previous poster, have been receiving many calls from numbers in the 416-000 range.  I don't answer, since it's obviously not a real number.  I can only guess that they're sequentially dialing within a known prefix and hoping to catch a customer.

Just like previous posts, I received a call from this # today @ 4:37 PM. I called the # back and there is a message "1-T-3, your call can not be completed... blah blah blah"...
