It's a SCAM!! I've had other types of these people call and leave a message saying "court summons" was being delivered to my work or home in 4 days, if I wanted to settle outside of court to call the plaintiff. That day came and went, I got NOTHING served! This is the third or fourth time in 3 years that I've received a call like this. These people try and scare you into paying anything cause you are afraid of court or prison.
I even had one swear they had proof that I lived in Missouri and took the loan out. She said they will take me to court to prove it and I replied "I would LOVE to see you there because there is NO WAY you can prove I EVER lived there because I didn't!" I NEVER heard from them again! I'm sure they sold my info these yahoos!
These people are losers!! Tall tale signs I follow to determine scam:
1) if they can not provide a debt validation (proof of debt as required by law), they are a SCAM!
2) if they only accept credit card, check by phone, western union or payments in full, SCAM!
3) if they don't have a mailing address, SCAM!
Just because they have your social, phone numbers and past addresses, it doesn't mean they have a legitimate debt they are collecting. The legitimate collectors will send you a letter proving the debt, will accept checks or money orders by mail, and will accept payments that you can afford.
Never, ever give up your personal information, and never ever give out your bank, ATM or credit card info, always pay with money order. This is what I've learned from expert advice on radio shows pertaining to credit safety.
