  trying to verify employment on a employee

First, the post you are replying to is 2 years old.  Second, number can be spoofed so unless you actually know who you are talking to never assume anything.  Third, why would they need to verify your employment if you are applying for a job?

this is a 3rd party employment verification service.  they work for Verifications Inc. that merged with another company.  i am suspicious when i get calls out of area.  i did a little skipping on them and it showed verifications inc for call back 2014.  i am familiar with their employment verification process.  Truthfully, if they really want to verify just do an SSN search and see where people have really worked.  but that's just me.

They called and left a message saying they were calling to do employment verification. I have been with my current company for over three years, and I have not applied for anything at all which would require anybody to call me to verify my employment. So I'm not sure if this is some sort of scam?  When he called and said who he was calling from, he said it so fast and his accent made it impossible to tell what he was saying, but it was not verifications inc.
