Our digital cable service displays incoming calls on the television, and this number appeared several times in just the last hour. I looked up the number, arrived on this page, and then decided to call them back. I spoke to a "Chayla" and I followed the advice above. It was GREAT! I loved being in control, and I could tell that Chayla was getting flustered. ("May I have your name?" she asked. I responded, "I'm calling to get information, not give it." Chayla's response: "Well, I like to know who I'm talking to." Me: " 'Ma'am' will suffice.")
She finally gave me the name of "the person who holds a debt with the company we represent," and it was no name I had ever heard. (I did make her spell it out for me.) It could have been one of my husband's roommates FROM 15 YEARS AGO, but he's not home at the moment! :-D
Anyway, Chayla assured me that our number would be removed from the list. I thanked her and politely ended the conversation.
