Won't work. Caller ID is like the return address on an envelope. They can put any number there they want. See spoofcard.com for a commercial service that does this.

There have been a lot of calls offering "free" alarm systems in our community lately. It's the same message, but the caller ID is different every time.

And legislation? Where are you going to get the millions of dollars for lobbyists and campaign donations? That's what the industry spent to make sure the legislation we have is toothless, and that there's only a pittance in the budget for enforcement. Classic case of best regulation money can buy.

I got the same call as everyone else.  Caller ID said Neighborhood Watch.  I hung up and am filing a complaint for violation of the Do Not Call List.

The local police/sheriff don't even have enough personnel to send someone out sometimes, these dopes can't convince me the FBI is interested!

Actually it is good to take precautions to make your house safe (lock doors even when home; don't leave windows open in the front or side if you are working in the back yard, if you are going to go walk the dog for only five minutes, shut everything and lock up because quick robs are the most common, they say.

You probably already have a neighborhood watch, get a meeting tohpgether or start a group with the surrounding 12-16 homes with common property lines; those furthest out in that group will need to be in another group encompassing that home's surrounding 12-16 neighbors.  It is all free, by the way.  The County or local police often have "Neighborhood Watch" signs they'll give you for free (because you're doing their job!)

And take a moment to report the phone number associated with this obvious scam, though you'll have to do it again and again as they re-spoof a new number.

It is a scam. Not just some bogus offer we don't need or won't work.
I really feel as though they are performing some kind of "are-they-home?" scam before coming over to burgle your place.  LOCK YOUR DOORS PEOPLE!!

Leave a radio on in a couple rooms, loud enough to be heard from the front porch, if you're going to be away from the house, even for "just a few minutes."  A few minutes is how long it takes for some punk to gain access and grab your DVD player, watch, or what have you.  They will get five bucks for pawning your bedside radio, then rob several more homes with careless security, till they have enough for whatever baggie of drugs they're desperate for.

I do feel concerned for some little old lady who always answers the phone and likes talking to anybody and everybody, will talk to these jerks and reveal both her vulnerability and the fact that she's alone, then end up hurt.  Bad guys don't want anyone home when they come over, so protect yourself now before anything happens.  And tell your Granny, because she is NOT on the Internet, am I wrong?
