called the phone, I answered, call disconnected. I called back, received a recording about holding on while "they" look-up my account.

You better check your phone bill. There is a scam where they keep you on hold after you have called them and charge you fees. The numbers usually look as if they are from the US but might be international. Just What I've heard.
