WARNING:  PAYDAY LOAN SCAM

Someone left a message from this number regarding a debt that they say I owe.  I live in Indiana and don't owe any debts, but some debt collector in Boston has recently started harassing me.  I think this is a ghosted number made to look like it is coming out of Indiana.

When my VM picked up, I heard a man's voice tell his name and the name of the company, but this sounded like it was being run through a distortion machine so you couldn't understand what he was saying, although it did sound like he was saying something about a law office.... then the voice cleared up and he started talking about how urgent his message was and how it was an attempt to collect a debt, and how I needed to call him back at some 800 number - of course, the 800 number was spoken clearly. The number he wanted to be called back on is   8664214920, which is a number that everyone else is saying is part of the Payday Loan Scam.  They ghost a local number and then have you call back on their 800 line.  They are located no where near the local area you are in.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

This number called my cell phone, but did not leave a message. When I called the number back, a lady by the name of Cheryl answered but did not name the company she was suppose to be representing or calling from.  ??  very strange!
