Biggest thing to remember is any callers who refuse to identify themselves are usually scammers or shady debt collectors trying to fly under the radar of the law. Any caller who refuses to mail you proof of debt and that you owe the debt to them, plus refuses to identify themselves, is owed nothing, per the FDCPA.
BTW, if you're concerned that a "legal matter" has been filed with your county, just call up your local county court and ask - they'll tell you if you're named and on the schedule. And if you really were named in a lawsuit, you'd have received something in the mail or had papers delivered by a court process server.
