No one gives you a heads up you'll be served - unless your caller is a scammer or junk debt buyer trying to scare you into paying for a debt that's already been paid, or never existed in the first place. Report your caller to the FTC, FBI, Dept of Justice and your state's Attorney General.
And it goes without saying - NEVER pay any caller who refuses to mail a debt validation letter showing original creditor, date of loan, amount of loan, amount still owed, date of last payment and if they have the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this documentation is a violation of the FDCPA and you should not pay them unless they prove you owe the debt to them.
