These guys tried to call a number of times.  It is absolutely a scam.  I called a few times from anonymous phone numbers just to see what they said.  Same guy answers, Indian accent, he answers stating that he is from the IRS, if you at all question his authenticity or give him a hard time, he hangs up.  Also read on another forum, he tries to trick you if you give him your phone number, he looks up a few things about you that sound pretty convincing to supposedly prove he is for real, but don't believe a thing he says.  It is a completely bogus scam artist at work.

Identifies him self as David Acosta, and being with the I.R.S., and is asking for either myself or my wife. Since he was speaking with my wife, he said this must be ***** . Then he stated that he was calling to inform us that we were being investigated for tax fraud and that he wanted our attorney's fax number so he could contact them. During the conversation he also confirmed our mailing address. He said that we needed to call him back at this number.
After terminating the call, my wife called this number and he answered " I.R.S., and identified himself as David Acosta"
We are calling the I.R.S.directly, as we doubt the validity of this phone call.

Our firm received two automated messages today saying that we "need to call back the IRS." We are a business. I am not phoning back -- the IRS does not operate this way!

There is a widespread IRS (or CRA) or "tax scam" being  practiced by scammers on both USA and Canadian residents.

USA tax payers should read this:
http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Phone-Scams-C ... 5-Filing-Season

Canadian tax payers should read this:
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/nwsrm/lrts/2013/l131210-eng.html

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:
