Being in debt is not a crime.  You can't be arrested for ordinary civil debt.  Only the district attorney or other public prosecutor can file criminal charges.  Debt collectors have nothing to do with criminal charges.  This is a common scam.   Threaten you with criminal charges to collect a civil debt.  Unlawful too.

Report them to your local attorney general.

File a complaint with the FBI on their Internet Crime webpage     http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

Got to your local police and make a complaint for extortion.  This is a total scam.  Do not talk to them, do not return their calls.  Do not pick up on numbers you don't recognize.

Fraudulent or Zombie Debt Collectors—Things to Know

If you have received a call stating:

1. You have defrauded a financial institution
2. You owe an unpaid payday loan
3. You have a warrant due to an unpaid loan
5. You will receive a court summons
6.  Authorities are coming to arrest you
7.  Anything similar to above,
 a.   Do not give them any information or verify any information for them
 b.   Tell them you know they are a scam operating illegally and that you are   filing a complaint with the  appropriate authorities
* File a complaint with the FBI on their Internet Crime webpage     http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
* File a complaint with the Attorney General for the state you live in
The more information and complaints there are, the better the chance of getting these criminals to stop (or at least reduce the frequency).    [abstracted from another site]

Also, like the rest of the people in above listings, I got a call from the number, 301-562-4941 claiming to be Financial Litigation Services and that it was their 2nd attempt to contact me.  Have not nor do I after reading posting plan on calling these crooks.  I and my 79 year old Father was already taken by this type of scam to the tune of $1900 plus.. They threatened to have my father arrested, he freaked out, scared that I and himself he paid them , just to get rid of this issue. Not one company did this to him, but 2. One charged over $912 to his card and the other charged him $789.  For just a $100 and $300 payday loans that he was not aware of and had nothing to do with.  These crooks will look into relatives and friends, anyone that will pay them.  No more, his and my number is on DO NOT CALL list.  Thank you for the heads up.

The Do Not Call list is useless with these people.  I have been routinely checking on line since last year for all these scams and I have come up with at least 25 scammers using the exact same tactics to steal your money.  First of all, even if you did take out a payday loan that you did not pay back, YOU WILL NEVER BE ARRESTED!!!  EVER!!!!  There will be NO sheriff or law enforcement officer coming to your door if you don't pay by 6 pm!!  The collection company will contact you by mail and give you the name of the original issuer of the loan, the exact amount you owe, when you took out the loan, and MOST IMPORTANTLY  an address and telephone number for you to contact.

There are ALL scams, each and every one of them!!  I know, because I receive phone calls or emails from these morons at least once a week under different bogus company names and phone numbers!!  So please people, do NOT be intimidated. If you do happen to pick up your phone and get one of these thieves, just tell them to their faces that they are scumbag scammers and are reporting them to the FTC, FBI, and your local law enforcement agencies.  DO NOT BE AFRAID!! Believe me, they WILL stop.  Good luck !!
