Claim to be calling and representing multiple energy companies to save me money on my electric bill.  When I asked for the company name, Kathy said they were "The Discount Center," and refused to provide an actual company name.  When I asked for the company address, she refused and then hung up.  Under PA law, if you are on the PA DNC list, a telemarketer MUST provide you with the name of the company calling and their address as well as the company they are representing.

If you are not on the National and State DNC, log on an register your phone numbers.

The problem is that these calls are from criminals attempting to obtain information to allow them to steal your identity.  If they ignore the 8th commandment and the law, don't expect the DNC list to help.  Legitimate merchants do abide by the list.  Filing complaints might make you feel better, but won't help, since the list (and the law) are being ignored. Answering the phone, or worse, calling a number that these thieves leave in a message will only verify that they have called an active phone number which they will now call repeatedly and sell to other criminal callers.  If you have call blocking, use it, if you have caller ID, don't answer the phone unless you know who is calling.  If you have an answering machine, let the call go there: legitimate callers will leave a message.  Unfortunately, a call going to an answering machine usually indicates an active phone number but at least you don't have to deal with it.

If they hang up when you ask for a name or address, BEWARE.  They are CRIMINALS calling you.  No legitimate business is 'afraid' to give out their name, address and phone number.

Criminals don't care about the DO NOT CALL LIST because they're going to rip you off far worse than just a phone illegal phone calls.
