This is one of several numbers used by the IndependentVoting.org group asking for money. They are legit, and a good cause, but definitely very persistent. I ignored their calls for a while because I had already given money in the last year, but when I finally did answer, I simply told them I had already given recently and they left me alone after that.

I got the same caller ID on my cell today, I googled and got the following site:

THE NEO-INDEPENDENT - Jacqueline Salit, Executive Editor
Postmodern Press - 302A West 12th Street, #140
New York, NY 10014
Phone: 212-609-2800 | Email: editor@neoindependent.com

not sure, but it seems to be the same switchboard. another telemarketing call? or just computers phishing for good numbers to call in the future... are you a registered independent as well?

yes, it's a political org that wants independent voters to be able to vote in primaries in all 50 states regardless of your party affiliation. a noble sounding cause but not sure if they're legit. they wanted to know if i'd be willing to donate $500! hah!  Friendly person, no pressure, quick call.

Yeah, they're a legit organization, but they do call a lot. I've given them some money a few times so I'm definitely on their list. You might be on their list too if you ever signed up for newsletters or whatever from a few of their affiliated organizations and websites. If you tell them you're not interested in donating for a while, they'll leave you alone again until their next big legal battle or campaign happens a few months later, but they will keep calling if you don't pick up. They do seem to have a fairly large switchboard so quite a few 212-609-xxxx numbers end up being them.
