Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

Yeah, I get the same calls over and older than dirt payday loan.  I get soooo sick of these bottom feeders. Get a real job like the rest of us and stop trying to scam hard working people out of their HARD EARNED money!! They need to be arrested and constantly called 24/7 on a phone in their cell and harrassed for years and years as punishment. PUNKS

I got a call from 207 494 5385 (Biddeford, ME on caller ID).  Its the call referring to summons and so on as everyone describes but for a female that doesn't live here.  This is the same message I was getting from a number in Utah a few weeks ago.  I called the Utah number and asked to have my number removed.  Now I am getting calls from this 207 494 5385 number.  I called, asked to have my number removed.  The girl that answers the phone is rude as all get out!  And cut me off while I was speaking.  I called back.  She got hostile and irate. I phoned back, she either would hang up or place me on hold.  I called her probably twenty plus times, just hit redial.  She finally answered.  "Why you keep calling!!!! I told you I took your number out of our system."  haha  I said "its annoying when your phone keeps ringing over and over again from a number you don't want!"  She hung up.  I then phoned back several times, being hung up on or placed on hold.  I called her on redial probably another twenty times.  She finally answers "May I help you?"  I asked to speak to a manager.  No manager on duty.  Then someone in your office besides you.  I want to know who your company is and who I need to speak with in your office.  Hung up!  I figure over load her rude tail with as many calls as possible!!!!!  It will drive her nuts and she'll make sure my number is out of their system.  haha

Continue to receive voicemail messages, stating charges have been filed against.
Several months ago, I made the mistake of answering - she became rude and I requested info in writing by mail or email. Of course, I never received anything. Calls stopped for 1-2 months....now receiving daily.
