Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

recording states that they are from the summons and processing department.  They claim my name and social security number have been attached and that I will be served 2 summons for fraudulent activity.  I have received over 5 messages in the past 2 days.  I never answer my house phone but this is ridiculous!  Anyone know how I can get them to stop calling and is there a way to stop this scam?

Call blocker might help.

Report them:

http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection

Also contact your local attorney general

If they continue to bother you, and you know you do not owe any money,  tell them that you know this is  a debt scam and that you are making a complaint to the police for extortion.  You might have to yell at the scammer and talk over him or her.  Once you get a copy of the police report and they call you again , just read out the  file number and the name of the PD or Sheriff’s office involved.   Tell them you’ll be glad to send a copy to them at whatever address the jack***es are working out of now.

Total scam.   Fraud charges are handled by public prosecutors.  Fruad is a crime.  Debt collectors have nothing to do with law enforcement and have no influence on what a law enforcement agency might do or not do.  This is just an attempt to scare you into paying them something.   No legitimate process server notifies you in advance that they are coming by.

Ignore and block these calls.

I just called them back about 10 times in a row.  Told them I'll keep calling them until they remove me.   I've supposedly been removed.  We'll see. ....
