"who and  why they called."  They called you hoping you would answer the phone.  They may or may not have had information gleaned from the internet or hacked sources.  As to why, they wanted to steal money from you to make a "lawsuit" go away, a nonexistent lawsuit since the IRS does not sue, and does not make phone calls.

They said they were the Internal Revenue Service and if I did not call them back I would be doing prison time and have huge fines to pay. I hung up on them, but still have concerns who and  why they called.
