Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans

Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010  FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.

According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.

The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim’s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims’ relatives, friends, and employers.

I thought I was losing my mind they had every information on me since 2007 when I became disabled I haven't work so I don't have a job so that wasn't correct but prior to this I applied for a Capital One credit card and that  information would have been shared with them they said I took out a payday loan in 2008 with cash advance and intently frauded the government and I was being apprehended for those charges unless Idecided to settle this right now there's nothing for me but those are just my rights  and if I decide not to act on their demands i will be apprehended outside my apartment they are watching me as I am speaking they scared the daylights out of me this is the last thing I needed with cancer I would love somebody to do something about this there calling me from Alabama with 4 different numbers they also told me the Attorney Generals office will be contacting me with the wire information to wire them the money if I want to save myself from a rough life in jail they even described my haircolor and eyecolor to a T that scared me more.   thank you

These people call me at least 12 times per day. They call my cell and my home phone and leave the same message every time. On one voicemail, you can hear a lady in the background asking what city she is calling!  This is how stupid these people are! They are calling from all over the US. Mainly, from different numbers, using my own area code. I answered one time and they asked me to verify the last 4 of my ssn. I asked her to give me the last 4 numbers that she has on file and I would verify if she had the correct last 4 digits or not. She then panicked and hung up. As a paralegal, I can assure everyone out there that if there was any type of lawsuit, allegation, etc against you, you would receive official documentation delivered by an authority figure...i.e. the local sheriff. You would never receive a phone call...especially one asking you to verify the last 4 digits of your ssn. I have reported all of the numbers that these idiots have called me from to my local phone company, as well as, the local police department. Report them! These [***] are mainly foreigners thinking that American citizens are dumbasses...well...we've got their number!!

called and refused to give me any information regarding the supposable debt, than asked for the last 4 of my SSN.  If I owe you money wouldn't you know that.  I informed them they could send me something in writing regarding the debt or to stop calling and harassing me I am not giving them a dime!
