It's legit alright, but the bad part about hero charities through random calls is you're giving more to the solicitor than you are the actual cause. If you wish to give to hero charities, do it by ways you find at your convenience, NOT by random phone calls from clowns claiming to be calling on behalf of. You have no way of knowing what percentage you give goes to the cause when you're donating through a cold call. It's best to stay away from these charities entirely, the callers not only can get financial information, but also personal details as well. One more thing bad with many of these charities is that if you say you're going to donate, you'll have to or suffer constant harassment that leaves you regretting saying you would. Hero charities are classified more as scams than legitimate.
