Got a recording

"I repeat 202-470-1418. This issue is very time sensitive so before we take any legal action against you call Crime and Law-Enforcement as soon as possible."

I called back on my cell phone (different number) and got a surly sounding man with a slight accent. Would not tell me anything unless I told him the number I got the call on which I did not want to do.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

Just ignore it. They call and identify themselves as a past due tax or similiar and want payment immediately or they will send law enforcement to arrest you. Don't be intimidated or curious. BOGUS call. They even go as far as trying to find out if you owe money to someone (IRS, State, Credit Card) and ask you amounts, etc. Really nothing you can do but ignore.
