Received automated call saying it was google trying to secure my account from a hack. Left a code for me to use. However, I checked and there was no attempt by google to advise me of the hack.

37 pages of entries that go back over a year - Lot's of complaints.  I checked my call records and I got a call from this number, it was not Google calling for a 2 digit verification code (I don't have google phone).  It was absolutely the old SEO bs about "Warning, your Google listing is ...".   At the minimum, this number is being spoofed.  But I am bothered by the sheer number of entries here, and that the Fake Google Gaggle tend to do some shilling here.

Calls from this number, esp if you don't have google phone, are apt to be "suspect".

It's the number for Google Voice. When you verify your phone number Google calls you and asks you to type the verification code presented on the Google Voice website

There may be many complaints about this number in the past but Google now owns it

That was my experience too. I was trying to log into a Gmail account of mine that I rarely use. Got the password wrong three times. Finally got the right one, but Gmail was suspicious. They wanted me to enter my phone number so they could call me with a verification code. The phone rang immediately and all the voice said was a series of numbers for me to enter on my log-in screen.

I can confirm that it is the number that calls you (automated call) when you sign up for Google Voice. I signed up for a Google Voice number almost two weeks ago and, if you want to enter a phone to receive your GV calls on, you are asked to verify that the number you provided was yours. You hit the call button on the GV page and they'll call your number with an automated message giving you a verification code that you enter on the site.

I agree with Rando (not sure if others have already suggested it) that the number was probably previously used by scammers or whoever, but now it's a number that Google owns for verifying stuff for Google Voice.

You can go to their site to sign up for it to try it for yourself and delete the account afterward (though it will delete eventually if you are lazy/forget about it and never use it).

The issue here is that there is a scam that involves tricking people into porting their number over to somebody using Google Voice.
