Answering machine picks up, caller hangs up.

Apparently it's a call regarding Veterens. I don't answer it and they never leave a message.  Just ignore/block it.

the guy wouldn't stop pestering me for donations, even after i advised him that i am on the do not call list, so i told him that i just lost my job and can't even afford my groceries, and he quickly apologized and hung up. bravo, sir.

Charities are exempt from the Do-Not-Call list. Of course, the telemarketers keep most of the money they collect and less than half of it goes to the charity, and charities that use telemarketing are questionable anyway, so never give them money.
